Waiting For A Haircut Is Painful

I go for a haircut

The craziest things can happen when you leave the house. As a student, I spend most of my time within the campus bubble. It makes the few occurrences that I venture out of this bubble feel weird and give off a sense of freedom. Today I am getting that feeling as I drive my car out to get a haircut.

My process for getting a haircut is normally pretty cut and dry. I will log in online, wait the estimated amount of time, try and gauge when I should drive to the store, and then go and wait for my name to be called. It’s not unusual for me to have trouble making good use of my time. I usually always end up waiting longer than expected because the online countdowns never seem to be accurate. Today is a similar experience; however, the interactions that I face are most unexpected.

As I patiently wait in the store, a man walks in off the street. He looks as though he hasn’t gotten a haircut in many months, perhaps well over a year (See how often you should get a haircut here). The man surely has forgotten just how painful it can be to get a haircut! It seems that he is more likely to rip his hair out than to wait in a nearly 2-hour wait.

The man walks in the store and declares that he needs a haircut. The sweet lady at the counter obliges and says that she will gladly put him on the list. However, he will have to wait awhile as the line of check-ins is long this evening.

The man has a terrible experience

Agreeingly the man decides that despite the long line he will wait. He finds a chair along the wall and begins passing his time playing on his phone.

Content as it sounds, the man begins to glare around the room in disapproval as the first 3 other customers are called to get a haircut. (Yes, I have been here THIS long! So much for efficiencies!) After another length of time, a stylist calls my name to receive my haircut. It looks as though the waiting room has now completely turned over. All new people are waiting for a haircut now.

The man becomes very evidently upset at this and calls to one of the workers. He asks, “Why is it that everyone here has been callBored Man Waitinged, and I am still here to wait?” The sweet lady tries to explain the long wait line again, but the man is becoming enraged. He demands that he has been waiting just as long as the rest of us getting our haircuts already. There is no reason to single him out because he hasn’t check in online prior to his arrival.

As the two continue to exchange words, he finally realizes, he is in a 2 hour wait! He can’t believe it! He curses the store and leaves in a rage.

The rest of us in the store are apologetic to the staff but also understanding of the man’s situation. How could it be so hard to walk in off the street and ask for a haircut in a timely fashion? It’s a problem we all face when it comes time to lose some hair. It’s time consuming!
